Monkeys in a Cage

DecriptionMonkeys of various species have been kept at Adelaide Zoo since the 1880s. The image shows six rhesus monkeys in an iron barred cage. These cages were introduced in 1911 and hailed as an advance over the previous cages (Advertiser, 18 March 1911, p7). A similar picture in the Mail newspaper in1912 was captioned 'The home of the monkeys'. The article continued: 'their antics raise more enjoyment than any other animals in the Zoo.' Members of the public threw peanuts to them which the monkeys tried to retrieve through the bars. The article continued while they 'look intelligent enough to be harmless,' they can be 'truculent and bad-tempered'. (Mail, 14 December 1912, p7). A monkey paddoc (an open air enclosure), opened in 1935. Far with pressure on space and keen to house different species of primates, the zoo closed its rhesus monkey exhibit in 1974.
The Adelaide Zoo first opened on 23 May 1883, occupying 6.5 hectares (16 acres) (now 8 hectares (20 acres)) of land granted by the Government. It was founded by the South Australian Acclimatization and Zoological Society. The society later became the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia after a Royal Charter was granted by King George VI in 1937.
