Big Cats at the Royal Adelaide Zoo

DecriptionThe Adelaide Zoo has kept lions almost continuously since it opened in 1883. The first African lions were imported from Melbourne Zoo (1884) and the Royal Zoological Society (1887). They and their progeny have bred with considerable success.
The lion cage shown in the image is typical of the old style enclosure - bare except for a small tree and a cement table on which the male lion is lying. It was built in the mid 1920s and regarded as much superior to the previous carnivora house:
'Several improvements are being effectedat the Adelaide Zoological Gardens. The most important is the construction of a large new carnivora house, at a cost of £2,000. Work on the erection of the walls was begun on June 29, and the house will be divided into four sections by a 4 ft. wall. The new structure will not have a roof, and will be a marked advance upon the present home of the lions and other similar big hearts. The
boundary walls will be about 15 ft. high, and visitors to the Zoo will be able to study the animals to the best advantage in surroundings more nearly approximating the natural habitat of the latter.' (Register, 11 August 1925, p8).
The Adelaide Zoo first opened on 23 May 1883, occupying 6.5 hectares (16 acres) (now 8 hectares (20 acres)) of land granted by the Government. It was founded by the South Australian Acclimatization and Zoological Society. The society later became the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia after a Royal Charter was granted by King George VI in 1937.
