The amateur swimming event was established in 1923 and soon became one of the state’s most prestigious long-distance swims. The gruelling 2.5km course began at the Commercial Rd ferry steps and finished in the Portland Canal. The swim was stopped in the mid-1960s because of poor water quality. Albyn Harry (Cocky) Stephens was a member of the Port Adelaide Amateur Swimming Club. Stephenson won the event in 1943 aged about 15 years. The race was open to all swimmers and had a staggered start or handicap.
