The Blue Funnel Line was founded by Alfred Holt who first went into shipping in 1853. In the early 20thC he expanded into the England-Australia-England service. This he did with various ships from 1910 - 1937. The company continued as a consortium with others until 1964 when it became cargo only.SignificanceA good example of the romantic image of sailors portrayed in shipping advertising and ephemera. The artist Maurice Randall used similar images in other works.DescriptionArtistic postcard featuring a sailor standing on the edge of a boat and about to throw a line. He is dressed in a blue sailor's uniform but is not a naval man. His cap carries the initials 'A.H&Co' - Alfred Holt and Company. He leans over a blue sea with land and township in the background. A small steam vessel is also in the picture. The picture is a watercolour (copy) by Maurice Randall (signed in bottom left corner).
The obverse side of the postcard has the following printed on it; 'POST CARD/ CORRESPONDENCE/ THE BLUE FUNNEL LINE/ ALFRED HOLT & CO/ India Buildings, Liverpool' and 'FOR THE ADDRESS ONLY' with a space for a postage stamp.
