ProvenanceThe badge was made by Atkinson for the local regatta held in 1921.SignificanceThis badge links to the popular rowing regattas hosted in South Australia from the early 20th century and modelled on the famous Henley on Thames regatta in Oxfordshire.
Originally staged by the Mayor and people of Henley as a public attraction with a fair and other amusements, the emphasis rapidly changed so that competitive amateur rowing became its main purpose.
The Hindmarsh River rises in the Mount Lofty Range below Mount Cone flows generally south by east through the Hindmarsh Valley before reaching its mouth and emptying into Encounter Bay at Victor Harbor. Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars.
South Australia hosted several regattas modelled after the Oxfordshire original. The first Henley on Torrens regatta (held on Adelaide city's River Torrens) was initiated by the Adelaide Rowing Club in 1910 and soon became one of the most popular events on the Adelaide Calendar.DescriptionThis is a round badge with simple pin fastener at back.
