ProvenanceThis object is one of a collection of 14 badges, all of various shapes with the majority being shield or silhouette cut. Printed on card, it served as fundraising and promotional material for the Lady Hore-Ruthven Junior Red Cross Home and was intended for purchase by members of the public wishing to support the cause.SignificanceThis card badge is an example of local fundraising efforts throughout the Depression and war years to support children’s ‘homes’. The original Lady Hore-Ruthven Junior Red Cross Home was situated along the Henley Beach esplanade. Through this object, we can also draw connections to our treatment of children at this time.
During this era, children were sometimes placed in homes when parents were unable to care for them. Other homes included Wanslea, Morialta, and St Mary’s Mission. Disabled or ill children stayed in hospitals or institutions while other organisations rallied to raise funds for their eventual transfer. Badge days, for example, were held for explicit or general fund-raising appeals. Prior to social service funding, they provided an important source of income for non-for-profit charities and organisations whilst visibly promoting their cause.DescriptionCard badge with metal pin.
