ProvenancePrepared by Messers Conrad & Co for the Price Maurice Expedition to central Australia 1897SignificanceFollowing John McDouall Stuart's successful crossing of the continent, South Australia had pressed its claim to the country between its northern boundary and the coast, and in July 1863 the Northern Territory was annexed to South Australia. This crossing resulted in the formation of the telegraph line, making South Australia the hub of communications for the nation. The world changed, too, for the Aboriginal people whose country Stuart had passed through. Pastoral stations, townships and mining settlements spread outwards from Stuart’s track from 1870, resulting in ongoing conflict over country. The Price Maurice Expedition was one of the following expeditions that travelled along Stuart's route, this time in search of his infamous tree marked with a large 'S' as a means of establishing his crossing.DescriptionLarge glass jar with lid containing pieces of biltong (dried meat) and a piece of cotton wool. Originally soaked in formalin. Large piece of faded paper stuck to jar bearing documentation. ‘BILTONG H56/ Prepared in 1897 by Conrad & Co./ from BEEF for Mr Price/Maurice on his exploration/ trip to Central Australia given me by Mr Tom Boykett/ on 29th July 1924./ When he searched for MacDouall Stuart’s tree.
