ProvenanceThis, and other associated items, were donated by Dick Palmer, an avid collector of badges relating to South Australian life.
Badge produced for the Semaphore Patriotic Sports Carnival.
The Semaphore Patriotic Sports was held in January, on Foundation Day, during World War I to fundraise for various wartime charities. For example, in 1918 the money raised was devoted to the Semaphore Cheer-Up Society. Many water sports races were organised for the day including the main event ketch race, yacht and swimming races, navy and military swimming events, as well as foot races.SignificanceThis and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of fundraising and sporting organisations in Australia. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century, particularly during wartime.DescriptionA circular badge consisting of printed paper between a tin base and a celluloid cover.
