ProvenanceSouvenir badge produced to raise funds at the Cobdogla Patriotic Carnival August 1918 in aid of the Soldiers’ Home League.
Sports carnivals were a popular fundraising event organised by local communities to support the war effort. The days were very popular and attracted many spectators. Badges were sold at these events as souvenirs and helped to raise funds for the cause of the community. This was sometimes a soldiers’ memorial for the area or a specific charity. The Cobdogla Patriotic Carnival involved athletic events in the afternoon, followed by a grand concert in the evening.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during World War I. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
