ProvenanceTailem Bend Celebration of Peace Day Badge in 1919. The badges were sold as part of the fundraising efforts of the day.
July 1919 marked the celebrations of Peace Day around Australia. In Tailem Bend, the Peace Day celebrations raised funds for the Tailem Bend Soldiers’ Memorial Park, for which £80 was collected. Children received free dinner and tea, a bag of sweets and fruit to encourage attendance. Spectators enjoyed horse races, foot races and novelty events. Lunch was provided to over 500 attendees. The sale of badges such as this one depicting the river and others depicting the railway station raised £20 alone. The celebrations ended with a bonfire and an evening concert in the Town Hall.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during World War I. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
