ProvenanceBadge sold to raise funds to buy comforts for the North Terrace Tubercular and Cancer Home residents.
The Tubercular and Cancer Home on North Terrace held an appeal in June 1925 to raise funds in order to provide comforts for the residents. These comforts included services of a barber, warm clothing, phonograph records, pipes and cigarettes. Over £400 was raised on the day from donations and the sale of souvenir badges. Over 11,000 badges were sold by volunteers in the city, at Port Adelaide and Glenelg. Appeals for the same cause in country towns were made after the event in Adelaide.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during or after the First World War. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
