ProvenanceSouvenir badge produced as part of the fundraising efforts for Campbelltown’s Patriotic Carnival held in November 1917.
Patriotic carnivals were popular events put on by local communities to raise funds for various wartime charities. The proceeds from the Campbelltown, Paradise and Athelstone districts carnival went to the South Australian Soldiers Fund and the Red Cross Fund. Events included a parade with decorated motor vehicles and carts, a queen competition, ring events, musical performances and various stalls with goods for sale.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during the First World War. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
