ProvenanceBadge produced as part of a fundraising appeal for the Goodwood Orphanage.
The Goodwood Orphanage (also known as the St Vincent de Paul orphanage) was a Catholic orphanage started in 1866. The orphanage moved to Goodwood in 1888 and various building works were undertaken to extend the premises over the following decades. A new wing was opened in 1924. At the time of the appeal in 1922, there were around 130 children who lived in the orphanage. The home was closed in 1975. The orphanage held a fete as a fundraiser which included stalls, amusements and performances.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds for particular organisations or causes in the early 1900s. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
