ProvenanceBadge produced for Greek Day 1941 as a fundraiser for the Greek Appeal Fund.
Onlookers overseas were impressed by the show of force shown by the Greek Army against Italian forces in the beginning months of that year. Local groups organised events on Greek Day to raise funds for supplies for the Greek Army. Gala days were held across Australia in March 1941 to raise funds for this appeal. The sale of badges, stickers and products at stalls were organised. Some communities also organised parades, sporting events and queen competitions.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during the twentieth century. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
