ProvenanceBadge produced for the Legacy Club appeal to raise funds for war orphans.
Legacy was started in 1923 originally to assist returned servicemen to find work. In 1925 the focus of the clubs changed to assisting widows and children of deceased or injured servicemen. Fundraising for this work began in 1942 and continues today as Legacy Week. During and immediately after the war Legacy made multiple appeals to the public to fundraise for the war orphans. The aim of the Club was to extend to the orphans of servicemen the guidance and advice that their fathers would have given, provide support for medical and dental care or financial assistance for their mothers.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during the twentieth century. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
