ProvenanceBadge produced as a souvenir of the opening of the Goolwa Brass Band Rotunda in January 1919.
The newly-formed band financed the rotunda, which is located in the Soldiers’ Memorial Garden in the centre of the town, previously the location of the railway station. The opening of the rotunda included a ceremony with speeches, performances by the band and local guest musicians, followed by supper and a dance in the evening. Badges with a photograph of the rotunda were sold on the day. The event raised a total of £30.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during World War I. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge, printed paper between tin base & celluloid cover.
