ProvenanceDonated by cricketer W, Freeman.SignificanceCricket was a very popular game in early South Australia, although many of the earlier 'clubs' seem to have been somewhat casual associations that formed for a season or two. In Port Adelaide, matches were regularly held between rival businesses and with crews in Port. The Outer Harbor Club had a strong connection with visiting ship traffic, often challenging steamer crews to cricket matches. Their annual social was held at the Missions to Seamen’s' Hall. The photograph reflects the way sport was used to break down social barriers and provide diversion for seafarers in Port Adelaide.DescriptionPhotograph of the Outer Harbor Cricket Club.
