Ink Bottle

ProvenanceThis ink bottle was reportedly used by John McDouall Stuart during his expeditions across Australia from north to south. Stuart and his party kept detailed and most useful reports of their journeys. The successful all weather route to Darwin from Adelaide led to the laying of the Overland Telegraph Line. A photograph of the artefact is in the object file together with further information on John McDouall Stuart and his expeditions.SignificancePart of the Historical Relics collection.Following Stuart’s successful crossing of the continent, South Australia had pressed its claim to the country between its northern boundary and the coast, and in July 1863 the Northern Territory was annexed to South Australia.

South Australia also succeeded in securing the route for the Overland Telegraph Line. Constructed between 1870 and 1872, largely along Stuart’s route, it made Adelaide the hub of a communications network connecting the Australian colonies with the rest of the British Empire and Europe.

The world changed, too, for the Aboriginal people whose country Stuart had passed through. Pastoral stations, townships and mining settlements spread outwards from Stuart’s track from 1870, resulting in ongoing conflict over country.DescriptionA travelling ink bottle in a rectangular, black leather covered (apart from the base) box. A spring release catch raises the 1.3cm lid to reveal the top and neck of a glass bottle set into the base and held in place by a green painted plate.
