ProvenanceThis is reported to have belonged to Captain Charles Sturt. Captain Sturt made many watercolour sketches while on his expeditions therefore it is possible this box was used by him. Sturt came to Australia in 1827 as a Captain in charge of a regiment guarding convicts to NSW. He became Military Secretary to Governor Darling who became responsible for Sturt's first exploration of the interior in 1828, in search of an inland sea. He followed rivers of NSW to the Darling & thence to the Murray and through South Australia to its mouth where Goolwa now stands. He returned to Sydney in 1830. Captain Sturt moved to Adelaide in 1838 and built his home at the Grange in 1840 - this now operates as a historical museum to Sturt. See the object file for further information on Captain Charles Sturt.SignificanceSturt's watercolours and sketches offer an insight into early European explorers' impressions of the South Australian landscape. Prior to the use of photography, watercolours and drawings were only way to convey visual information about the hitherto unknown landscapes of the South Australian interior. These kinds of images were of particular importance to prospective colonists interested in the possibilities of this land as a new site for European settlement. Based on what he read in Sturt's book, Edward Gibbon Wakefield chose South Australia as the site for his new colony. Part of the Historical Relics collection.DescriptionA rectangular wooden box, possibly mahogany. Base and lid are secured with two brass hinges at back with six screws. The brass locking mechanism on the front has no key. The outer lid of the box has scrolled brass corners and a centre piece with a lift-up handle. All brass is inset and screwed down. Interior is lined with blue velvet. Far left side has three deep compartments and the remaining area holds a shallow tray divided into a number of compartments with wooden dividers also covered in blue velvet.
