Log Book of Captain Jack Sheridan 1920
Expand/collapse
Details
ProvenanceSeven heavy cardboard bound logbook - diaries. All books are titled 'Woods' Australian Diary' and have paper covers with numerous company advertisements. The three day to a page diaries run 1918 - 1922(x2) and 1924. Each diary refers to a particular vessel and master's name in the front, except where pages have been removed. Entries are made in pen or pencil at regular intervals throughout the years. The 1919 log is for the ketch PORTONIAN as it traded between the Gulfs with Jack Sheridan as Master and Leonard Sheridan as Chief Mate. Mention made of R. Hawker at Bungaree (station near Clare), and of fishing. The 1918 log has a note in the back page which refers to the wreck of the ketch INA on Sisby Island, 10 November 1917. The 1920 log for PORTONIAN and ACACIA (owned by R. Hawker), 1921 is for the PORTONIAN. Notes at the beginning of 1921 & 1922 detail the purchase of the schooner ALCAIRO on 31 December 1921. The log of 1922 sites Sheridan's address as Pretoria Road, Birkenhead. The 1924 log has details of the privately owned SS ISIS, a yacht of Port Adelaide, of which Sheridan was the Master. He mentions many trips to and from Kangaroo Island where popular history has known him as something of a pirate.
The ketch PORTONIAN was bought by Jack Sheridan 1918/1919 and became a fishing vessel in 1924 and was wrecked in October 1924. The ALCAIRO was wrecked at Marion Bay when it dragged anchor and ran ashore. The cargo of gypsum was unloaded but refloating attempts failed. The yacht ISIS was owned by Sam Perry who employed Sheridan as Master.
The donors of the books bough property at Western River, Kangaroo Island, from Ruth and Stan Sheridan - son of Jack - in 1966. Jack Sheridan was reported to be 'the last pirate' on Kangaroo Island. One story relates to a raid on a beached vessel, where the floating cargo of Oregon timber was towed away.Significance DescriptionOne of seven heavy cardboard bound logbook - diaries.
