Bowl and Spoon Set

Details

ProvenancePart of the stock at "The China Gift Store", 233A Rundle Street. Owned by Gladys Sym Choon and opened in 1923. Sold oriental goods imported from China and agents in Australia. The store was passed on to her daughter Mei Ling Niel in 1979 and due to changing tastes in Adelaide society, closed in 1985. Currently the shop premises are operated by Joff Chappell under the name "Miss Gladys Sym Choon".SignificanceThe Sym Choons are a Chinese South Australian dynasty. Illustrates Gladys Sym Choon's achievement as being the first woman in South Australia to form a business in her own right. Demonstrates a style of oriental eating utensil decorated typically with ancient Chinese dedications of dragons and birds, that were commonly applied to household items.DescriptionThree large bowls, all identical in size and shape (a-c). Each has a raised circular base to give them a unique style. The outsides are decorated in gold with two white sections on either side showing handpainted colourful images of a red dragon and a green bird. As the images are handpainted, they are all similar but not identical. The insides are glazed but not painted. The bottoms of a&b have four red Chinese writing characters enclosed in a circle.

Two small dipping bowls (d&e) decorated on the inside with a similar dragon pattern to a-c, with gold around the rim. The outside is plain, with the word 'China' printed inside the raised base which is similar to the larger bowls.
Three soup spoons (f-h) of traditional Chinese design with flat bottoms to allow them to stand independently. The handles have a deep groove in them and are painted gold, which carries on down around the spoon. Each has a dragon decoration inside the spoon, all slightly different due to the handpainting.
