Pamir was originally built for the nitrate trade from South America. Purchased by Capt. Erickson of Marieham, Finland, in the 1930's and used for the Australian Grain trade for the next eight years. When she arrived at Wellington in August 1941 with a cargo of guano from the Sychelles she was taken as a prize because Finland had entered the war on the German side. She made five round trips under the N.Z. flag from New Zealand to Canada and the U.S.A. In November 1947 she sailed from Wellington to the Thames in eighty days. In 1951 she was sold for breaking but was reprieved by a West German firm who bought her to trade with South America. Later she was used with 'Passat', by Heinz Schliewen of Hamburg as a cadet training vessel. She was lsot about 600 miles south west of the Azores in a storm with winds recorded over 75 knots.
