ProvenanceThese were the Hungarian identity card, with photo, of Anna Kiss and the identity photo (only) of Kalman Kiss, used during the years of 1942-44.SignificanceAnna and Kalman Kiss fled from Hungary in 1945 when it was occupied by the Soviet Army. They could not return to Hungary after the war because Kalman had been a Lieutenant in a tank division of the Hungarian Army and therefore had served under the Germans. They travelled to Austria, and from there applied to the International Refugee Organisation (IRO). They arrived in Adelaide in 1949 as displaced persons. These identity cards were essential documents needed to travel within Europe and necessary to establish their nationality and claim to refugee status.DescriptionIdentity card and photo.
