The United Nations defines a refugee as "A person forced to flee their country because of violence or persecution."
Since 1947 Australia has provided a new home to over three-quarters of a million people under the Humanitarian Program. Fleeing persecution, war and conflict, these people have been recognised as refugees by the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
It could be argued that South Australia has been a home to refugees since Lutheran's fled the edicts of the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1838. South Australia continues to provide a safe haven to people who have suffered conflict, hardship, or catasrophe in their homelands.
