ProvenanceThis commemorative card was produced by the Bulgarian community in South Australia. The scene on the front is of a Bulgarian man and woman dancing in traditional costume.
This type of card is used to commemorate Martenitza, celebrated on 1 March. It heralds the turn of the seasons from winter to spring. 1 March is also the date on which the Byzantine Emperor, Constantine IV signed a peace treaty in 681 which recognised the first Bulgarian state.
On Martenitza Bulgarian South Australians send each other these greeting cards decorated with red and white tassels to commemorate this important event in Bulgarian history. The inscription reads: 'To Mary, with wishes for health, happiness and joy, from the Bulgarians in Adelaide'.
This card was given to Migration Museum research officer, Mary Geyer, (donor), in March 1993 as a thank you for her research on Bulgarian South Australians for the Migration Museum's database of immigration and settlement history.SignificanceRepresentative of continued Bulgarian identity and cultural practice in South Australia.DescriptionGreeting card of thick white card.
