ProvenanceThe donor of this mould, Erica, migrated with her family from the Netherlands to Australia in 1959 when she was nine years old.

They brought this biscuit mould and other items form their home country with them.

Speculaas are Dutch Christmas biscuits traditionally made in wooden moulds. They are in particular eaten in the Netherlands and Belgium for St Nicholas’ Day. The spices for speculaas are pepper, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom and nutmeg.SignificanceThis object is representative of migrants belongings and demonstrates the continuation of cultural traditions and practices once migrants had moved to Australia.
