ProvenanceThis log book was used on the Middle Bank lightship between 1901 and 1902. The Middle Bank lightship, built in Port Adelaide during the 1850s and serving as a lightship at Semaphore, Tipara, Port Germain and Port Pirie, was permanently brought to Middle Bank in Spencer Gulf for renovations. The Middle Bank lightship was put into service on 15 January 1896. It was seen as a great necessity that some form of light, either house or ship, be placed at the dangerous point of the South Australian coast. Vessels along Spencer Gulf had no marker of their position and would not be made aware of the danger of their position until it was too late and they arrived on the bank.SignificanceThis item is representative of coastal navigation developments in South Australia.DescriptionLog book ledger with entries between 1901 and 1902.AcknowledgementDate of CreationBetween 1st January 1901 and 31st December 1902Date of UsageBetween 1st January 1901 and 31st December 1902DimensionType: Closed
