1923 Waratah

Details

ProvenanceOriginally Waratah Motorcycles were manufactured by the Canada Cycle & Motor Agency Ltd. W.A. Williams was the manager of the Sydney branch on George Street. In 1905 Williams purchased the Canada Cycle & Motor Agency, retaining its name until 1913 when the bicycle and motorcycle part of the business was taken over by his sons and renamed William Bros. The business on 213-7 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, is widely known as the manufacturer of Waratah motorcycles from 1914 to 1948.
Waratah motorcycles were built from standard parts such as Villiers two-stroke engines and Sun frame components until the late 1930s. In the 1920s the Waratah was a lightweight motorcycle, but the 1928 models were much larger adopting the Sun saddle tank frame and Brampton fork. In the 1930s new models were on offer with 125, 148 and 250cc motors along with a Villiers Junior auto cycle in 1939. Waratah motorcycles continued to be sold through the Second World War until 1948.They were Australia's longest running motorcycle manufacturer, producing functional motorcycles for a general audience.

This example of the 1923 model has been in the Museum's collection since 1987 and has been restored.SignificanceThis is a good example of an early Australian badged motorcycle.
