ProvenanceThis patriotic music collection was published during the Second World War, in 1943. The songbook was purchased by the curator for the collection.SignificanceCarl Linger wrote the music for Song of Australia in 1859, winning first prize in the Gawler Institute competition. A German intellectual and musician, Linger had struggled to survive as a farmer when he first arrived in South Australia in 1849. He then worked as a piano tuner, which gave him the social connections he used to become a noted music teacher to the colony’s elite. South Australians have long considered Song of Australia an unofficial anthem.DescriptionCream rectangular book, red font, border line colours red and blue.
