Yellow Flowered Dress

ProvenancePart of the Catford Collection but not previously catalogued by Beth Catford. Note accompanying the dress reads "Donated by Gay Foulis / Willowie / Oct 1984".SignificanceAn example of 20th century women’s clothing.

This dress is part of the Beth Catford costume collection, which contains a wide range of costume and accessories, numbering in the region of 2000 individual items dating between the 1830s and 1970s.

In 1971 Beth Catford inherited the nucleus of a costume collection from her aunt Therese Innes and went on to build it into a notable collection of great historical significance. It was displayed in her Yesteryear Costume Gallery, a private museum in Orroroo in South Australia’s mid-north, until it was donated to the History Trust of South Australia.DescriptionPale yellow, or lemon, 'ballerina' style dress. The base is a yellow, probably rayon, taffeta with an overlay of pale yellow cotton or silk organza. The fitted bodice is made of a layer of taffeta with two layers of organza. It has sewn bra cups that are covered in cream cotton velvet, five petalled flowers, 45mm diameter, that have been folded in half and glued at the base, with strips of bias cut green silk (or possibly cotton) as leaves. There is a pleated frill around the top of organza, a 34mm wide bias strip folded in half and pleated. There is a 47mm wide bias facing along the top edge of the bodice. The shoulder straps are pairs of 3mm wide rouleaux, knotted at the top of the shoulder.

The garment has been partially altered at the bust, on the right hand side, the organza pleating, facing and side seam have been unpicked, but not resewn. There is piping at the waist-line. The 770mm long flared skirt is constructed of a half circle layer of taffeta, a half circle layer of organza, and the top layer of organza is a full circle skirt.
