ProvenanceBadge produced for the Hills Carnival held in November 1916.
The communities of Crafers, Stirling, Mount Lofty, Aldgate, Bridgewater and the vicinity put on a carnival to raise money for the Soldiers’ Fund and the Soldiers’ Repatriation Fund. The weather was stormy and cold, but still hundreds of people attended the proceedings. The events of the day included a procession from the different towns which met in Stirling, stalls selling a wide variety of products, musical performances, decorated motor cars, a queen competition, sideshows, sports events and a range of exhibits.SignificanceIllustrative of the badges that were popular as a means of raising funds or showing support for particular organisations or causes during the First World War. This and other associated badges are a rich source of evidence on the material and cultural history of Australia, particularly during wartime. The symbols, colours and mottoes used on the badges themselves also express ideas about the values and identity that Australians held in the early to mid-twentieth century.DescriptionCircular badge: printed paper between tin base and celluloid cover.
