Details

ProvenanceStitched by 8-year old Caroline Tucker in England in 1836, the sampler was brought to Australia by Caroline's daughter or niece, Annie Louise Hubbard in approximately 1890. Caroline Tucker was not an orphan as the text implies. In South Australia Annie L. Hubbard married a Strathalbyn solicitor, Edward Jones Tucker, who was actually her mother's cousin.SignificanceAn example of the retention of family heritage and culture through items brought to South Australia. The sampler illustrates the cultural expectations of an English female child in 1836, when proficiency in needlework was an essential skill. Samplers were a popular educational ‘tool’ for girls from around the late 18th century.DescriptionThe sampler is entirely hand stitched, with a floral border surrounding the text. The sampler has a dark-stained Australian oak frame. The thread is faded but wholly intact. The creator's name and age, and the date of manufacture is written below the main text, which is a poem called "The Orphan". There are various patterns, flowers and other objects surrounding the text.
