ProvenanceThis painting was part of the Isolation Appreciation online gallery exhibition as part of SALA, followed by a physical exhibition end of August 2020. Day Options participants have worked solo, in groups, and with Disability Support Workers’ assistance to produce an amazing range of artwork for exhibition in the SALA Festival. The topic for the exhibition was chosen to help communicate how the Covid-19 pandemic impacted on the Bedford clients and how they feel about it. The History in the Making team was successful in acquiring the artwork via online auction.
The artist, James Amos-Trelor wanted to create a painting of the ocean, sky and sand with a bright sun and shells on the beach, as he enjoyed spending time with his Nanna and going for walks along the beach during his self isolation. James wanted there to be flags, just like the lifesaver use to represent 'Safety First'. James put his safety first by self-isolating during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Bedford Art Space is a busy creative hub, with classes nearly every day. Community Access and Lifestyle clients gain a creative outlet and for those who are either non-verbal or have difficulty expressing themselves, it also provides a unique means of communication.SignificanceThe artwork illustrates how clients from the Bedford Day Options were impacted by the pandemic and showcase that creating art has enabled them to communicate and document their feelings. The aim of the History in the Making collection is to document the diversity of people and their responses to Covid-19. The artwork makes a significant contribution to the collection as it represents the voices of people with disabilities in South Australia.DescriptionThis is an acrylic painiting on stretched canvas.
