ProvenanceSuzy McKenna followed the History Trust of South Australia Call out and submitted her story to the History in the Making project. She wrote:
‘In the early days of the virus - March 2020, my son was in Delhi and had to make a quick decision to return to Adelaide or go to Stockholm. In the end he went to Sweden and, inevitably, came down with the virus - but was it? No testing there. He was sick for a couple of weeks as were the grandchildren. Anyway I decided, instead of worrying, to pass the time by knitting and crocheting the corona virus digital representation. And then I wrote patterns for them. In my dreams I thought they might go viral and I'd become a millionaire.’SignificanceThe 'History in the Making: Collecting South Australia during COVID-19' project aims to collect objects relating to both, individual South Australians’ experience of the pandemic and the operation of businesses, charities, and government institutions during the pandemic. The item tells a personal story during the pandemic. The beanie is an artistic representation of the virus image and relates to knitting as stress relief instead of worrying about family members who might have contracted the virus.DescriptionThis ia a knitted beanie in grey with red and yellow dots replicating the media image of the Corona virus.Creator (person)Suzy McKennaCreator (organisation)AcknowledgementDate of Creationmid 2020Date of Usagemid 2020MaterialTextile - acrylic DimensionType: flat
