ProvenanceThe Children, Youth and Women’s Health Service (CYWHS) was established in 1909 by Dr Helen Mayo, Miss Harriet Stirling, and Mrs P Morice. Known then as the School for Mothers in Adelaide, the organisations aim was to reduce infant mortality by providing expert advice to mothers.
In 1926 the School for Mothers changed its name to become to Mothers and Babies Health Association (MBHA). Run from its Adelaide headquarters on South Terrace, most knew the MBHA as the local baby health centre where the sisters monitored babies’ growth and dispensed advice on feeding and management routines. In its peak, the MBHA introduced three baby health trains that took clinics to small, isolated communities.
On 1 July, 2011, CYWHS changed its name to the Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCHN).SignificanceOperational in Adelaide for over 100 years, this collection from the Children, Youth and Women's Health Association documents the contribution of a local enduring and indispensable service to the South Australian public.DescriptionHand-knitted toy penguin, made with cream, black and yellow wool.
