ProvenanceOn June 18th 2016, amateur soccer club the Adelaide Cobras wore rainbow armbands on the left sleeve of their jerseys in a show of solidarity and respect for the victims of the Orlando shooting in which a number of people were killed when gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub. On their Facebook page the team invited others to use this idea in their own sports events.
This jersey was donated by the team member who suggested the initiative and who is himself, a gay man.SignificanceThis initiative was a significant undertaking in an arena where hegemonic masculinity and homophobia are commonplace. The team made a video which explained that wearing the armband was a universal celebration of inclusivity through sport. They used the hashtag #RainbowArmband. https://www.facebook.com/rainbowarmband/?fref+nfDescriptionA green and white striped nylon soccer jersey as worn by the Adelaide Cobras.
