Dodonaea Subglandulifera - Sustaining life in our pandemic

Details

DescriptionThis plant embodies many elements of our way of life as dictated by this pandemic. It is a hardy local native - a survivor - seen only in a few scattered locations in the Mid-north and Murraylands of rural South Australia

Both rare and endangered, this gorgeous specimen has found refuge in my garden. It is flowering alongside other native plants. Nearby are my two Australian Silky terriers and four Barnevelder chickens bred less than a kilometre away, by neighbours in Callington. These creatures provide us with company, incentive to keep going, light relief, eggs and fertile compost.

We spend our days tending living things, the chemical free veggie patch, a tiny orchard comprising a lemon tree, two blueberry bushes and, the highlight, my native finger lime bush. My comforting, sustaining, distracting and engaging garden is completed by a mushroom farm and a worm farm housed in the potting shed.

A year ago my life revolved around work. Now, retired and a writer, my garden and my home provide a rich reservoir of ideas for my blog and enable me to cope with fears for family in the UK, and people the world over, so much more affected by Covid19 than South Australia. The gleaming beauty of this gutsy little plant soothes my soul and strengthens my spirit.CreatorMandy Toczek McPeakeLocationnot specifiedCatalogue NumberML20487
